Use of a national continuing medical education meeting to provide simulation-based training in temporary hemodialysis catheter insertion skills: a pre-test post-test study
Conclusions Despite most participants reporting having previously inserted NTHCs in clinical practice, none met the MPS at baseline; this suggests their prior training may have been inadequate.

Is Experience in Hemodialysis Cannulation Related to Expertise? A Metrics-based Investigation for Skills Assessment.
Abstract Cannulation is not only one of the most common medical procedures but also fraught with complications. The skill of the clinician performing cannulation directly impacts cannulation outcomes. However, current methods of teaching this skill are deficient, relying on subjective demonstrations and unrealistic manikins that have limited utility for skills training. Furthermore, of the factors that hinders effective continuing medical education is the assumption that clinical experience results in expertise. In this work, we examine if objective metrics acquired from a novel cannulation simulator are able to d...

The Culture of Education in a Large Dialysis Organization: Informing Patient‐Centered Decision Making on Treatment Options for Renal Replacement Therapy
Abstract Challenged by the observation that newly admitted dialysis patients were often unaware of their treatment options, Fresenius Medical Care, North America developed a program to improve information delivered to chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients prior to their need for renal replacement therapy. Six years ago, the Treatment Options Program (TOPs) was established utilizing a standardized approach to educate individuals with CKD Stages 3 and 4. The program education focuses on modality and vascular access options. A key component includes follow‐up at predetermined intervals, offering additional education and p...

A Paradigm Shift in Options, Education, and an Online Decision Aid: 'My Life, My Dialysis Choice'.
Abstract Dialysis options education in the United States for patients tends to focus on clinical aspects of ESRD treatment and on how each option is done. The non-profit Medical Education Institute (MEI) has developed an online, patient-centered dialysis decision aid that maps six dialysis options (peritoneal dialysis, standard incenter hemodialysis, conventional home hemodialysis, short daily hemodialysis, and nocturnal hemodialysis--incenter or at home) in four categories onto 24 different lifestyle and health values. This new free, non-commercial tool allows education to start with why an individual might want ...

Cost-effectiveness of dedicated dietitians for hyperphosphatemia management among hemodialysis patients in Lebanon: results from the Nutrition Education for Management of Osteodystrophy trial.
CONCLUSIONS: DD yielded the greatest effectiveness and decrease in societal costs, but did not affect QALY. Regarding serum phosphorus, DD was likely to be cost-effective compared with EP but had a low cost-effectiveness probability compared with THD. Regarding QALY, DD was not likely to be cost-effective. Assessing the long-term cost-effectiveness of DD, on similar groups, is recommended. PMID: 28657451 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

TVA Medical wins CE Mark for EverlinQ 4 endoAVF
TVA Medical said today it won CE Mark approval in the European Union for its EverlinQ 4 endoAVF system designed for creating hemodialysis access using an endovascular approach. The Austin, Texas-based company said the system consists of 2 magnetic catheters which are inserted into an artery and vein in the arm and use a small amount of radiofrequency energy to connect both to create a fistula. The catheters are then removed and the brachial vain is coil-embolized for future dialysis. “The new system with smaller profile catheters and radiopaque visual indicators was extremely easy to use. This new approach streamline...

Role of telehealth in renal replacement therapy education
Abstract The prevalence of end‐stage renal disease is rising in the United States, which bears high financial and public health burden. The most common modality of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the United States is in‐center hemodialysis. Many patients report lack of comprehensive and timely education about their treatment options, which may preclude them from participating in home‐based dialysis therapies and kidney transplantation evaluation. While RRT education has traditionally been provided in‐person, the rise of telehealth has afforded new opportunities to improve upon the status quo. For example, techno...

Home hemodialysis education during postdoctoral training: Challenges and innovations
Abstract Inadequate education in home hemodialysis (HHD) fellowship training might contribute to underutilization of this modality in the United States. Most graduates of nephrology fellowships do not grade themselves as competent in HHD suggesting that fellowship training in HHD is inadequate. An essential component for fellow education is at least one faculty member with expertise in HHD who is passionate about promoting the use of this modality. At a minimum, fellow training should utilize a curriculum that includes both lectures about HHD and outpatient clinical exposure to this modality over a period of at least 6‐1...
